The Heelhook is your one-stop destination for in-depth training articles, practical gear reviews, and outdoor adventure blogging. Built by climbers for climbers, our team of adventurers brings their passion for the outdoors to every article they write.
Meet the Team:
David Hallen
An avid climber and backpacker, David Hallen has been climbing for 6 or 7 years and hiking since he could walk. David is primarily a boulderer, but also loves to sport-climb when he has the chance. He loves being outside in any weather and is always keen to explore new trails and rock. When not at the crag or on a trail, J is a student at UNC Law and likes to stay involved in local politics.
Evan Kearse
Although he’s climbed since he was 5, Evan didn’t find his love for the sport until 18, but now loves trad and multi pitch climbing, has recently tried ice and crack climbing, and is learning to love the flow of bouldering. He frequently gets distracted by other outdoor pursuits including snowboarding, mountain biking, backpacking, and kayaking.
Hansac Ho
A lover of the outdoors and nature, Hansac did not find his passion for climbing until early 2019. Since then, he has been pushing himself to climb harder and longer, spending a few hours in the climbing gym training throughout the week and sending 5.12s. An avid supporter of National Parks and reducing carbon footprints, he is vegan and experiments with recipes in his free time. You can typically find him taking photos whenever he gets the opportunity to do so. He currently is studying Mechanical Engineering at NC State.
Jesse Buell
Jesse has been climbing for around five years at different locations around the United States. Jesse is primarily a bolt-clipper (ahem, sport climber) but also climbs trad and occasionally wrestles with pebbles. He also coaches on the side. When not at the crag, he is studying Kinesiology at San Jose State University, training at his in-home boulder gym, or hanging out with his wife Sophie and puppy Chico.
Liz Hubbard
If it was feasible to spend more nights in the woods than in her bed, Liz would probably do that–and she plans to when she thru hikes the Pacific Crest Trail next year after completing her degrees in chemical engineering and political science at NC State University. Liz has been climbing for 4 years, and her favorite type of climbing is sport. In addition to backpacking and climbing, she also enjoys snowboarding, swimming, paddling, and just about any outdoor activity you can think of.
Nic Cornejo
Rock Climber, photographer/videographer, Type 1 diabetic, and lover of being outside. Nic has been climbing for a little over 6 years, and plays the Weekend Warrior game hard, and can be found playing on some rocks around the South East almost every weekend throughout the year, no matter the weather. Nic has specialized primarily in bouldering, but can be found hanging out on a rope trying to do the “long boulders” during “rope season”.
